How do I write category page copy that ranks?

Write something that helps a shopper choose, and put a short version above the grid rather than burying 800 words underneath it. That block of keyword-stuffed text at the bottom of category pages does almost nothing now. What ranks instead is content that answers the decisions people are actually making: which type, what size, how to pick.

Understand what the query wants

Someone searching ‘cotton kurta set for women’ is comparing, not researching. They want to see products straight away. Give them just enough guidance to narrow the field. So the product grid stays first. Any copy that shoves products below the fold trades away sales to win a ranking, and that is a bad trade.

Look at what already ranks for your term. If the results are all category pages, then a category page is what you need. If they are guides and listicles, the query is informational, and you are better off building a guide that links across to the category than forcing the category page to do a job it was never right for.

What to actually write

Two or three sentences above the grid. What is in this category, who it suits, what makes yours different. Concrete and specific: fabric, fit, price range, what ships within two days.

Below the grid, write buying guidance a person would genuinely read. How to pick the right size when you cannot try it on. The difference between the fabric weights you stock. Care instructions. What works for a Delhi summer as against Bangalore weather. Each of those answers a real question, and each one naturally carries the phrases people actually type into search.

Add FAQs pulled from your own customer service inbox, and answer them properly. Those are the highest-value words on the whole page, because they come from real confusion, and they often win the question-shaped searches your competitors quietly ignore.

Then filters and internal links. A page that links sensibly through to its subcategories helps shoppers and crawlers alike, and subcategory pages usually rank more easily than the broad parent above them.

What not to do

Do not repeat the target phrase eleven times. Do not write a paragraph about how your brand was born from a passion for quality. And do not duplicate the same block across forty category pages with the keyword swapped out each time, which is the single fastest route to having none of them rank at all.

Check it worked in Search Console. Watch impressions and average position for the category page across six to eight weeks, and watch which queries it starts turning up for, because often you will rank for something adjacent that you never once targeted, and that is a quiet signal about what to build next.

How long should category page copy be? +

As long as it stays useful, and no longer. Two or three sentences above the grid, then a few hundred words of genuine buying guidance below it, remembering that length itself is not a ranking factor and that padding a page to hit some word count almost always reads exactly like padding.

Should every category page have unique copy? +

Yes, for the categories you actually want to rank. Near-duplicate text spread across many pages gives search engines no reason to prefer any one of them over the rest. Prioritise your commercially important categories instead of spreading thin copy everywhere.
