How do I get cited in ChatGPT and AI Overviews?
How these systems pick sources
Two inputs, broadly. What the model absorbed during training, and what it retrieves live from search at the moment of the question. Google’s AI Overviews lean heavily on what already ranks. ChatGPT and Perplexity run their own retrieval. Different pipes, similar preferences.
What they favour is a page that contains a clean, extractable answer to a specific question. Not a general page about a topic. A page that says, in a single sentence a machine can lift without mangling it, what the answer actually is. That is exactly why question-shaped pages tend to outperform brochure pages here by a wide margin, even in the fairly common case where that same brochure page ranks better than they do in classic search.
They also favour agreement. If four credible sources say the same thing about your company, that becomes the answer. If only your own site says it, it usually does not.
What to actually build
Write one page per real question, using the phrasing people actually use. Answer in the opening sentence. Then support it. This structure is not a trick, it is simply easier to quote.
Put a named, real author on the page, with genuine credentials and a clear, obvious route for any reader who wants it to go and verify for themselves that those stated credentials actually check out. Anonymous content performs worse across both search quality signals and AI citation. Add structured data for the organisation, for the author and for any FAQ blocks on the page, because doing so removes almost all of the ambiguity about who exactly is saying what, and machines dislike ambiguity.
Keep your facts consistent everywhere. Your address, service list, pricing approach and founding details should match across your site, your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directory listings. Contradictions across sources make a model less likely to state anything about you at all.
Then earn mentions. Industry publications, podcasts, genuine directories, contributed pieces. Unlinked brand mentions still count here, which is a real shift away from classic link building.
Measuring something that has no dashboard
Ask the questions yourself, in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, once a month, and record what gets cited. Tedious. Also the only direct evidence available.
Watch the referral traffic coming in from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai inside your analytics, which is still a small trickle for most sites today, but it is growing steadily and it is genuinely worth trending over time. And watch for the pattern where branded searches rise without a matching rise in clicks, which often means people are hearing about you inside an AI answer and searching for you afterwards.

Answer specific questions directly, in the first sentence, on a page that is clearly attributed to someone real. AI systems pull from pages that state an answer plainly rather than building to it over twelve paragraphs. Being mentioned on other credible sites matters too, because these models weight consensus. There is no submission form and no paid route.
No. There is no advertising placement and no submission process for citations in these answers. Anyone selling guaranteed AI citations is selling something they do not control, in the same way ranking guarantees were sold a decade ago.
Considerably, especially for Google's AI Overviews, which draw heavily on pages already ranking well. Strong technical foundations, indexable content and topical depth remain the base layer that everything else sits on top of.
