How do I get repeat guests without discounting?
Being remembered is the cheapest loyalty there is
A guest greeted by name on their third visit becomes a regular far more reliably than one handed a ten percent card. This is a systems problem, not a personality one. Keep a simple record of regulars, their usual table, what they drink, whether they came with family. Any decent POS handles it, or even a shared sheet.
Brief the floor before service. Two quiet minutes on who is booked in tonight and what you already know about each of them changes the entire feel of the evening for those tables, and those are exactly the guests who come back and bring four friends next month.
Reasons to come back that are not price
A rotating special that changes on a known schedule. Regulars start checking what is on this week, which turns your menu into a reason to return rather than a fixed list they have already read.
A recurring night with a name. Same day every week, long enough to build a habit. It takes a couple of months before it earns its keep, and most restaurants abandon it at week five.
Early access instead of discounts. Regulars get the new menu a week before anyone else, or first refusal on festival bookings. It costs nothing. It feels considerably better than a coupon.
And fix the reasons people do not come back. Slow service on a full Saturday. An inconsistent dish. A bill that took twenty minutes. Guests rarely complain about these. They just stop appearing.
Owning the channel
Collect phone numbers at the table, with consent, and then use WhatsApp rather than email for anything you send, because the gap between the two open rates in India is not close and a message that never gets opened may as well not exist. Send it occasionally, and only with something worth reading. A weekly promotional blast gets you blocked, which costs you that customer permanently.
Track repeat rate by month, and separately track how many of your covers come from guests you can identify. If you cannot identify anyone, you have no loyalty programme. You have a discount scheme with extra steps.

Give people a reason to return that is tied to a date and a name rather than a price. Recognition works. So does a rotating dish, a fixed event night and a message from a human on a channel the guest already uses. Discounts do produce repeat visits, but they attract the customers who leave the moment you stop, and they compress your margin permanently.
Frequency-based mechanics work better than spend-based ones, and digital beats a paper card nobody carries. The mechanic matters less than whether your staff mention it consistently, which is where most schemes quietly die.
Roughly twice a month, and only when there is something real to say. A new menu. An event. A festival booking window. Frequency without substance gets you muted, and a muted list is functionally an empty one.
