Why is my Shopify store slow?

Almost always three things: too many apps injecting scripts, images that were never compressed, and a theme carrying features you do not use. Shopify hosting itself is rarely the problem. Every app you install adds JavaScript to every page, including the ones it has nothing to do with, and that pile-up is what your customer on 4G is waiting for.

What is actually loading

Apps first. Review widgets, popups, upsell tools, chat, analytics, a second analytics tool nobody uninstalled, loyalty programmes, size charts. Each one adds requests. Ten apps can easily add several seconds on a mid-range Android, which is what a large share of Indian shoppers are holding.

Images second. A hero banner exported at 4000 pixels wide and two megabytes, displayed at 400 pixels on a phone. Product galleries with fifteen full-size images all loading at once, an oversized hero sitting on top of them, and you have the single most common cause of a slow store, which also happens to be the easiest one to fix.

Theme third. Premium themes ship with sliders, animations, video backgrounds and font loading you may never need. Add a page builder on top of a heavy premium theme, and you can quite easily end up with a single product page firing off three hundred separate requests just to sell one plain T-shirt.

Then the smaller drags: four custom fonts, embedded Instagram feeds, autoplaying video, and third-party pixels stacked in the header.

Fixing it in order

Audit the apps and uninstall anything you cannot name a purpose for. Uninstalling does not always strip the code. Check your theme files for leftover script tags after removal. This step alone often recovers a second or more.

Compress every image and serve modern formats. Aim for well under 200KB on hero images. Let Shopify handle the responsive sizing, rather than you uploading one enormous file. Lazy-load anything below the fold.

Strip the theme. Turn off sliders and animations, cut down to two font weights, and remove sections you do not use. If the theme is heavily customised and nobody on the team remembers quite why, a clean rebuild on a light, modern theme is frequently faster and cheaper than trying to repair the old one.

Move what you can into Shopify’s customer events, rather than pasting pixels straight into the theme header.

Testing properly

Run PageSpeed Insights on the mobile tab for your home page, a collection page and a product page, because they differ a lot. Then run the real test. Open your store on your own phone, on mobile data, not office wifi, and time how long it takes until you can tap add to cart. That number is what your customer actually lives.

Watch your mobile conversion rate for a fortnight after the fixes have gone live, because speed work tends to show up there, in the conversion number, well before it shows up anywhere else you might be looking.

Does site speed affect my Google rankings? +

It is one signal among many, and a slow site rarely outranks its own problem. The bigger effect is commercial. Slow mobile pages lose buyers who already arrived, so you pay the acquisition cost and then lose the order anyway.

Are page builder apps bad for speed? +

They add weight, sometimes a lot of it. Used on a few landing pages, they are manageable. Used to build every single product page on the store, they usually become the largest drag on your load times.
