What is AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are the AI generated summaries Google places above the organic results for many searches. They pull from several web pages, write a short synthesis and link out to the sources. For the searcher that often ends the journey, and for your site it means the first thing anybody sees is no longer your listing but a summary that may or may not happen to mention you.

Google AI Overviews

How Google builds them

Google decides per query whether an overview is useful. Broad informational questions tend to trigger one, transactional and navigational searches often do not, and the system then retrieves relevant pages, generates a summary and attaches source links beside or beneath the text it has written.

Getting cited correlates with ranking well conventionally, though it is not a strict mapping. Pages that show up in overviews are usually pages Google already trusts on the topic, and clear structure helps, since the model has to locate a specific claim inside your page rather than infer it from the surrounding context.

The overview also changes what sits below it. Your listing might still hold position two, but position two now begins several hundred pixels further down the screen. On a phone that is a real distance.

The wrong reaction

Two failure modes here. Panic is the usual first response, followed by a plan to stop publishing informational content altogether, which overcorrects badly, because informational content is what builds the topical depth that gets you cited in the first place and it still catches people early in a decision.

The opposite error is ignoring the shift entirely. If your reporting shows a soft decline on definitional queries while commercial pages hold steady, that is the pattern, and it deserves to be named rather than blamed on a vague algorithm update.

Blocking Google from using your content is technically possible. It usually costs more than it saves.

What to do about it

Shift weight towards queries an overview cannot finish. Pricing that moves, local availability, booking, comparison against real alternatives. Nobody buys a ₹3 crore Golf Course Road apartment off a search summary, they read for weeks and then they call, which is exactly the ground where your own pages still decide the outcome. That gap is yours.

Segment your Search Console data by query type and watch impressions against clicks, because a page holding its impressions while clicks slide is telling you an overview now sits above it, and that is a content brief rather than a crisis. Then give the reader something a paragraph cannot: original photography, a floor plan, a comparison table.

FAQ

AI Overviews — questions, answered.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews? +

There are content controls that limit how your pages get used in AI features, but applying them broadly can affect your visibility across search more widely, so most sites are better served by adapting the content mix instead.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks? +

They can, particularly for questions the summary answers in full. Commercial and local queries where somebody needs to compare, book or call tend to hold up better, since the summary does not complete the task for them.
