What is Heatmap?

A heatmap is a visual layer over your page showing where visitors clicked, moved or stopped scrolling. Warm colours mark heavy activity and cool colours mark neglect. Tools like Hotjar, Microsoft Clarity and Crazy Egg build them from real sessions. Treat what you see as a diagnosis worth investigating, never as a conclusion you can act on blindly.

Heatmap

How heatmaps actually work

Three main types. Click maps show where people tapped, scroll maps show how far down the page each portion of your audience travelled, and move maps track cursor position on desktop, which correlates loosely with attention and not at all on mobile.

A script records the coordinates of those interactions across many sessions and aggregates them into a single image, which means you need real volume before the picture stabilises and a page pulling forty visitors a week will show you nothing but noise. Always segment by device. Mobile and desktop tell different stories.

Where teams get heatmaps wrong

Treating them as proof. A heatmap shows what happened and never why, so heavy clicking on a non-clickable image tells you people expected it to do something without telling you what they expected it to do.

Second, ignoring scroll depth while judging a page, which is how teams end up arguing for a fortnight about a testimonial block that only a small fraction of visitors ever scrolled far enough to see. Fix the reach problem first.

Third, reading a map built from too few sessions. Twenty visits produce a pattern that looks meaningful and is entirely random.

What good looks like in India

Microsoft Clarity is the practical starting point for most Indian brands since it carries no usage cost and handles heatmaps and session recordings together. Install it, let it collect for a fortnight, then look hard at mobile.

The recurring findings on Indian e-commerce sites stay consistent: people tapping product images expecting a zoom that does not exist, almost nobody reaching a benefits section placed below a long specification table, and rage clicks on a shipping calculator that responds too slowly on mobile data. Each is a one-day fix.

FAQ

Heatmap — questions, answered.

How many sessions does a heatmap need? +

A few thousand page views before the patterns become trustworthy. Below that you are studying individual behaviour rather than a trend, which is what session recordings exist for. Give a low-traffic page several weeks to accumulate.

Do heatmaps slow down my site? +

The tracking script adds weight, though modern tools load asynchronously and the effect is usually small. If page speed is already a problem, run heatmaps for a defined research window and then remove the script.
