What is Map Pack?

The map pack is the boxed set of three local businesses Google shows with a map, above the blue links, for searches that carry local intent. Think ‘dentist near me’ or ‘2bhk broker Sector 57’. Ranking here runs on proximity, relevance and prominence, not on your homepage title tag. Three slots. Everyone else is below the fold.

Google Local Pack

How the map pack actually gets filled

Google picks the three from its own index of business profiles rather than from your website, and distance from the searcher does most of the heavy lifting, which is why a small clinic sitting in Sector 14 Gurugram can beat a far bigger chain in Sector 45 for the identical query. You cannot argue with geography.

Relevance comes next. The primary category on your profile matters more than almost anything else you control, so a restaurant group that tagged an outlet as ‘Restaurant’ when the real query volume sits on ‘North Indian Restaurant’ has quietly entered itself into the wrong competition. Prominence is the third leg, and it is built from review count, review recency, mentions across Justdial and Sulekha, and the links pointing at that location page.

The pack also shifts by device and by the exact words used, so the three results you see on a phone while walking through Cyber Hub will often differ from the three a colleague sees on a desktop in Noida ten minutes later.

Where teams get it wrong

The most common error is treating one profile as the whole business, when a hospitality group running four outlets across Delhi NCR needs four separate profiles, each with its own address, its own phone line and its own person responsible for answering it. Collapsing them into a single head-office listing kills most of your local visibility.

Second mistake: chasing the pack for queries where no pack exists. ‘Best interior design ideas’ returns articles, not a map, and your team can burn an entire quarter optimising for a result type Google was never going to show for that phrase.

Third, and this one is expensive, is the phone number. Marketing swaps in a tracking number, the profile now disagrees with every directory listing you have ever built, and prominence drops without anyone connecting the two events.

What this looks like in practice

A real estate site office in Noida Extension will pull most of its walk-in enquiries from the map pack rather than from MagicBricks or 99acres, because those portals capture the browsing phase while the pack catches the person who has already decided to visit this weekend and simply wants directions.

Watch what the enquiry does next. In India the tap is usually on WhatsApp or the call button and almost never on the website link, so put a WhatsApp-enabled number on the profile, keep someone genuinely answering it between 10am and 8pm, and stop grading map pack performance by sessions in Analytics.

FAQ

Map Pack — questions, answered.

How many businesses show in the map pack? +

Three on most searches, though Google sometimes shows two for very sparse categories or a single result for branded queries. The expanded map view gives you the longer local finder list, where positions four through twenty sit.

Can paid ads appear inside the map pack? +

Yes. Google places Local Services and location-extension ads at the top of the pack, which pushes an organic slot down, so in competitive categories like clinics and packers in Gurugram you are often fighting for two visible spots rather than three.
