What is NAP Consistency?

NAP consistency means your business name, address and phone number appear in exactly the same form across every listing, directory and page that mentions you. Google matches these strings to confirm a business is real and singular. Mismatched addresses across Justdial, Sulekha and your own footer look like two different businesses, and confidence drops.

Name Address Phone Consistency

How the matching works

Google assembles a picture of your business by comparing what it finds across dozens of places at once, including your website footer, your own profile, Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, the aggregator listings and whatever local chamber directory picked you up in 2019. When those agree, the entity is confident. When they disagree, Google has to guess.

The formatting rules are stricter than they look, because ‘Plot 14, Sector 29, Gurugram, Haryana 122001’ and ‘14 Sector-29, Gurgaon 122001’ are obviously the same place to you and a coin flip to a matching algorithm. Gurgaon versus Gurugram alone has split thousands of listings across the NCR.

Phone numbers carry the identical problem, since a landline written with the STD code, a mobile written without one, and a version carrying the +91 prefix all read as three different contacts unless you pick a single written form and hold every team to it.

Where this quietly breaks

Office moves. A brand shifts from Udyog Vihar to Golf Course Road, updates the website within a week, and then forgets the forty-odd directory entries created over eight years by three different agencies, all of which keep feeding Google a contradiction that nobody on the marketing team can see.

Call tracking is the second offender, where a performance team drops a unique number into the site header for attribution while the profile and every directory still carry the old landline. Attribution improves. Local rankings do not.

The third is the name itself: the legal name on your GST paperwork, the trading name on the signboard, and some keyword-padded variant that an agency put on the listing to chase a phrase. Use the name on your board. Nothing else.

What this looks like in practice

Indian addresses are messy by nature, with landmarks standing in for street numbers, sectors abbreviated four different ways, and the same building carrying three accepted spellings, so write one canonical version, keep it in a shared document, and make every team that creates a listing copy it character for character.

For a multi-outlet restaurant group that discipline is worth real money. If the Bandra outlet is listed under two slightly different addresses, the reviews and mentions split between them, and neither version builds enough prominence to hold a map pack slot against a competitor running one clean listing.

FAQ

NAP Consistency — questions, answered.

Does a suite or floor number need to match too? +

Yes, keep it identical wherever you can. Google tolerates minor formatting differences, but the more your listings agree on unit, floor and building name, the less guesswork the matching has to do, especially in dense commercial complexes.

How do we fix old listings we no longer control? +

Most Indian directories including Justdial and Sulekha offer a claim or edit-request flow. Work through the biggest sources first, since a handful of high-traffic directories carry far more weight than a long tail of small ones nobody visits.
