What is Review Velocity?

Review velocity is how fast you earn new reviews, measured as a rate over time rather than a lifetime total. A clinic collecting six honest reviews a month looks alive. One with two hundred reviews, all from 2022, looks closed. Google weighs recency, and so do the people reading your profile before they call.

Customer Review Velocity

How the rate gets read

Two signals sit inside velocity, because recency tells both Google and the reader that you are trading right now, while consistency tells them the reviews arrived from real footfall over months rather than from a single co-ordinated push. A steady trickle beats a spike.

Spikes are also risky. Forty reviews landing in one week on a profile that had averaged one a month for two years is exactly the shape of a purchased batch, Google filters aggressively for that pattern, and the reviews can vanish weeks after they appeared.

Content matters alongside count, since reviews mentioning the specific service, the location or the doctor by name hand Google usable relevance signals, whereas a rating-only click nudges your average and does almost nothing else for you.

Where review programmes go wrong

Gating is the big one. Sending out a survey and then routing only the happy respondents through to Google breaks platform policy outright and can get your whole review set wiped, so ask everyone, and accept that an occasional three-star with a sensible public reply reads as far more credible than an unbroken wall of fives.

Incentives are the second problem, because offering a discount in exchange for a review is against policy on Google and most aggregators, and Indian customers cheerfully mention the discount inside the review often enough to get you flagged.

Third, nobody replies. An unanswered complaint about a delayed possession date or a ninety-minute clinic wait sits near the top of your profile for years. Reply within a day. Short, specific, no template.

What this looks like in practice

Build the ask into the moment the service ends, so a restaurant in Sector 29 puts a short link on the bill folder and a clinic sends the request over WhatsApp an hour after the appointment, because that is the channel the patient already used to book. A real estate team asks on the spot, at the end of a site visit.

Set a modest monthly target and actually hold it. Five to eight a month, every month across a full year, will do more for a Gurugram outlet than a one-off push of eighty in March followed by nine months of silence.

FAQ

Review Velocity — questions, answered.

Is it against policy to ask customers for reviews? +

Asking is fine on Google as long as you ask everyone and offer nothing in return. What breaks policy is filtering for positive sentiment before you ask, or attaching a discount, gift or loyalty benefit to leaving one.

Should we reply to every review? +

Reply to all the negative ones and a reasonable share of the positive. Responses are public and future customers will read them, so name the specific issue, say what changed as a result, and keep the whole thing under fifty words.
