What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation)?

AEO, or Answer Engine Optimisation, is the work of getting your content selected as the direct answer rather than one blue link among ten. That covers featured snippets, voice results and the answer boxes AI assistants assemble. The unit of success shifts, because you are no longer competing for a position, you are competing to be the single sentence somebody reads out loud or hears back from a phone.

Answer Engine Optimisation

The mechanics behind it

Answer engines look for content already shaped like an answer. A question stated plainly, then a tight response directly underneath, then the supporting detail for anyone who wants it. When the response sits forty lines below the question, buried under preamble about how much the industry has changed in recent years, the extractor has nothing clean to take and moves on to a competitor who wasted less of its time.

Structured data helps the machine work out what it is looking at. FAQPage markup, Product markup carrying real prices, LocalBusiness markup with your actual Gurugram address and opening hours. None of it guarantees selection. It removes ambiguity, a smaller and more honest benefit than most vendors admit.

Phrasing matters more than people expect. Somebody typing into a laptop and somebody speaking into a phone from the back of a cab use noticeably different words, so a page built only around ‘best rooftop restaurant Cyber Hub’ will miss the person asking where they should eat near Cyber Hub tonight. Cover both.

Common missteps

Teams write the question as a heading and then answer it in the third paragraph. The extractor gives up. Put the response first, in one or two sentences, and expand underneath.

Another pattern: publishing forty near identical entries because somebody read that question blocks help, which splits your relevance across pages that all say roughly the same thing and reads as padding to any human who scrolls that far. Ten real questions beat forty invented ones.

Then there is the fear of being too useful. Some brands hold the answer back to force a form fill or a phone call, and answer engines simply route around them, because if your page will not say what a two bedroom flat in Noida Sector 150 costs, another page will, and that page gets named instead.

Applying it to an Indian business

Think about how your customers actually ask. A Bandra boutique fields questions about delivery timelines, alterations and store timings all through festival week, while a hospitality group in Gurugram gets asked about parking at Cyber Hub and whether the terrace stays open through monsoon, and every one of those belongs on the site in a clean paragraph.

Watch your Google Business Profile questions too. And your WhatsApp threads. That is unfiltered source material, and anything asked three times in a week should already be answered somewhere you control.

FAQ

AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) — questions, answered.

Does AEO replace ranking well? +

No. You generally need to sit in the top handful of results before a system will consider your page as a source at all, so AEO governs how the content is written and marked up once you are already competitive.

Which schema types matter most? +

For most Indian service and retail brands, LocalBusiness, FAQPage, Product and Article cover the ground. Mark up what is genuinely on the page, because inventing markup for content that does not exist creates problems later.
