What is Backlink?
A backlink is a link pointing to your site from somewhere else on the web. Search engines read it as a recommendation, though not all recommendations weigh the same, because a link from a national business daily counts for vastly more than one from a directory nobody visits. Links marked rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored" pass little ranking value at all.
Inbound Backlink
How search engines weigh a link
Relevance first. A link to your Gurugram interiors studio from an architecture publication carries obvious topical alignment, whereas the identical link sitting on a cryptocurrency blog carries none, and a profile full of that second kind starts raising questions you would rather not answer.
After relevance comes the authority of the linking domain, then placement on the page, since a link woven into the body of an article beats one parked in a sidebar or an author bio, and the anchor text supplies Google with context about what your destination page covers.
The rel attribute changes everything. Sponsored placements need rel="sponsored", user-generated links need rel="ugc", and getting this wrong on paid work is precisely the sort of thing that attracts a manual action.
Where link building goes sideways
Buying packages. Somebody offers 500 links for ₹15,000 and the arithmetic alone tells you what those links must be, which is expired domains, private blog networks and footer farms, so at best they do nothing and at worst you spend the next six months disavowing them.
Chasing volume over fit is the subtler version of that same error, because ten genuinely relevant links from Indian property and design publications will move a real estate site further than three hundred generic directory entries ever could. Fit beats count. Consistently.
And ignoring what you already have, since unlinked brand mentions sit inside press coverage all the time, waiting for somebody to email the editor and ask politely. That is the cheapest link you will ever earn.
What this looks like in practice
For a hospitality brand the realistic sources are travel publications, city guides, food writers who already covered your restaurant, and local business associations, and one proper feature in a well-read Delhi lifestyle title will outperform a whole quarter of directory submissions. Budget for the relationship.
Property brands have an extra angle, because project launches, RERA registration details and construction milestones read as genuinely newsworthy to trade press, so the story mostly writes itself provided you supply usable images and a spokesperson who answers the phone. Pitch the editor directly. Track every result in a sheet.

Backlink — questions, answered.
No. Google treats rel=nofollow as a hint rather than a hard rule now, and links from high-traffic sites send real visitors regardless of the attribute. A nofollow link from a major news site is still worth having, just not for ranking maths alone.
Google has to crawl the linking page first, which can take days or weeks depending on how often that site gets crawled. Any ranking effect builds gradually after that. Judge link building over quarters, never over a single week.
