What is Bounce Rate?

Bounce rate is the share of sessions where the visitor did not engage. GA4 redefined it as the inverse of engagement rate, so a bounce is now a session under ten seconds with no conversion and no second page view. Universal Analytics counted any single-page session as a bounce, which is exactly why your old and new numbers refuse to line up.

How bounce rate actually works

GA4 treats a session as engaged if it runs past ten seconds, fires a conversion event, or includes two or more page views, and anything failing all three tests bounces. That ten-second threshold is adjustable in your settings, which most people never discover.

The change matters because the old definition punished pages that did their job perfectly well. Someone landing on a blog post, reading for four minutes and leaving satisfied counted the same as someone hitting back in two seconds. GA4 can tell them apart. Read it per landing page.

Where teams get bounce rate wrong

Treating it as a quality score. High bounce on a contact page where the visitor found your number and rang you is not a failure, it is the page working exactly as intended, whereas high bounce on a category page is a genuine problem worth solving.

The second mistake is chasing the number itself, since you can lower it by splitting an article across five pages or firing a scroll event early, and neither of those earns you a rupee.

Third, ignoring what a sudden spike is telling you. Bounce jumping on one landing page usually means a slow hero image, a broken ad link, an instant popup, or a mismatch between what the ad promised and what the page shows.

What good looks like in India

Mobile-heavy Indian traffic bounces more, and network conditions explain a good deal of it, because a page taking five seconds on a mid-range handset outside the metros loses people who never saw a word of the content you wrote. Compress images. Defer scripts. Cut third-party tags.

The other big one is message match. If your Meta ad promised a monsoon offer and the landing page shows a generic homepage, people leave in under two seconds, so send every campaign somewhere that repeats its promise in the first screen.

FAQ

Bounce Rate — questions, answered.

Is a high bounce rate always bad? +

No. On a blog post, a store locator or a contact page, a visitor can get precisely what they came for and leave satisfied. Judge bounce against the page’s purpose first, then against its own history rather than any benchmark.

Why is my GA4 bounce rate different from Universal Analytics? +

Different definitions entirely. UA counted every single-page session as a bounce, while GA4 counts a session as engaged if it passes ten seconds, converts, or reaches a second page. GA4 numbers usually come out lower.
