What is Canonical Tag?

A canonical tag is a line of HTML that names the preferred version of a page when several URLs show broadly the same content. It lives in the head as a rel=canonical link, and search engines read it as a strong hint, consolidating ranking signals onto the version you named. A hint, not an instruction. Google can and does overrule it.

How canonical tags work

Every page should carry one, even a page with no duplicates at all, pointing at itself, because that self-referencing canonical stops tracking parameters from spawning phantom versions when your Meta or Google Ads traffic lands with UTM strings attached.

When you point page B at page A you are asking Google to fold the link equity and relevance signals from B into A. Both stay reachable for visitors. Only A goes into the index.

Google then weighs your tag against every other signal it holds, meaning internal links, sitemap entries, redirects and which version carries more content, so contradict yourself across those and it will simply pick its own canonical instead. Search Console reports this under page indexing.

Where canonicals go wrong

Pointing every page in a section at the category homepage, usually done in the hope of concentrating authority, ends with Google dropping those individual pages from the index entirely and taking all your long tail traffic with them.

Canonical chains are next. Page A points to B, B points to C, signals leak at every hop, and the fix is always the same: point everything directly at the final destination and stop relaying.

Then the classic staging leak, where a site launches with every page still carrying a canonical aimed at the development domain, nothing gets indexed at all, and nobody notices for three weeks. Also watch paginated listings. Page four of a property listing holds distinct inventory, so do not canonical it back to page one.

What this looks like in practice

On a Shopify store the same product often appears under several collection paths, and while Shopify handles most of that by default, themes and apps break it often enough that you should verify each product resolves to a single canonical product URL.

For a hospitality group with near-identical pages covering its Gurugram, Noida and Indiranagar properties, resist the urge to canonical them together, because they target genuinely different local searches and folding them costs you two markets. Rewrite each page with real location detail. Audit quarterly. They drift after theme updates.

FAQ

Canonical Tag — questions, answered.

Should I use a canonical tag or a 301 redirect? +

Use a redirect when the old page should no longer be reachable by visitors, such as after a permanent URL change. Use a canonical when both versions need to stay live for genuine reasons, like print views or campaign URLs carrying tracking parameters.

Can a canonical tag point to a page on another domain? +

Yes, and cross-domain canonicals are the standard approach for syndicated content where a partner republishes your article and points back to your original. The receiving page must be live and must return a 200 status to be honoured.
