What is Cart Abandonment?
Cart abandonment is when someone adds products to their cart and leaves without completing the purchase. It happens on the majority of carts at every store on earth. Some of it is ordinary browsing you will never fix. A large chunk is checkout friction you absolutely can, and telling the two apart is where the money is.

How cart abandonment actually works
Shopify, WooCommerce and most checkout platforms fire an event when a cart is created and another when an order is placed, and the gap between those two numbers is your abandonment set, of which anyone who left a phone number or email while starting checkout is recoverable.
Recovery runs on timing. First message inside an hour for people who got interrupted, a second at 24 hours for the comparison shoppers, a third at 48 to 72 hours for whoever is still deciding. In India, WhatsApp beats email here comfortably. It gets opened.
Where teams get cart abandonment wrong
Leading with a discount. You have just taught your customers that abandoning a cart is how you get money off, and a decent number of them will start doing it deliberately from that point onward.
The bigger mistake is treating recovery as the solution when it is really a patch, because most abandonment is caused by something specific at checkout: shipping cost revealed too late, a forced account creation step, a missing payment method, or a page that crawls on a patchy mobile connection.
Fix checkout first. Every cart you stop losing is worth more than one you recover, since you keep full margin rather than discounted margin.
What good looks like in India
Three changes move the number most for Indian stores. Show total delivered cost early so nothing jumps at the final step, offer UPI prominently rather than buried beneath card fields, and let people check out as guests without creating an account they did not ask for.
On recovery, a WhatsApp flow through an approved business account outperforms email. Keep it short and human, reference the actual product, include an image, give a one-tap link back. A Gurugram brand running this properly recovers a real share of carts without discounting any of them.

Cart Abandonment — questions, answered.
Three is the sensible ceiling: one inside the first hour, one the following day, one around 48 to 72 hours. Past that you are pestering people who have clearly decided, and on WhatsApp that puts your business account at risk.
Not in the first one. Reminder first, social proof or a question second, incentive only at the end if at all. Leading with money off trains repeat abandonment and cuts margin on orders you would have won anyway.
