What is Core Web Vitals?
Core Web Vitals are three metrics Google uses to score the loading, interaction and visual stability of a page for real visitors. They are Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift. The scores come from Chrome users who actually visited your site, not from a lab simulation, and they surface inside Search Console as pass or fail.
Google Page Experience Metrics
How the three metrics work
LCP measures when the biggest visible element finishes rendering, usually a hero image or a headline block, and Google wants that inside 2.5 seconds. INP replaced First Input Delay and tracks how long the page takes to visually respond after a tap, with 200 milliseconds as the target.
CLS is different. It scores how much content jumps around while loading, which means the ad slot that expands, the webfont that swaps, the image without dimensions shoving a button downward at the exact moment your visitor reaches for it. Under 0.1 is the goal.
All three are graded at the 75th percentile of real visits, so the slow quarter of your audience decides your score.
Where teams go wrong
Teams optimise against Lighthouse on a fast office connection in Noida, watch the number turn green, and declare victory without ever checking whether real visitors experience anything like it. Lighthouse is a lab tool. Your field data in the Chrome UX Report may look nothing like it, because a large share of Indian traffic arrives on mid-range Android handsets over patchy 4G.
Another trap is treating this as a one-time fix. Marketing adds a chat widget, then a heatmap script, then two pixels for Meta and Google Ads, each one costing main thread time, and the page that passed comfortably in March is failing by July.
And uncompressed hero images. Still the biggest LCP offender.
What this looks like in practice
Take a hospitality brand running a booking page for a Gurugram property. Gallery images get converted to WebP and sized properly, the booking widget loads after first paint instead of blocking it, and every image and iframe carries explicit width and height so nothing shifts under a thumb.
For a Shopify store most of the damage comes from apps, so audit the installed list, remove anything not driving revenue, and push review widgets to lazy load below the fold rather than trusting your theme vendor to have handled it. Check field data monthly. Fix LCP first.

About 28 days, because the report runs on a rolling 28 day window of real user data, so a fix deployed today only reaches full effect roughly four weeks later. Use lab data for faster confirmation.
Not on its own. Google treats page experience as a tiebreaker rather than a primary signal, so it matters most when competing pages sit close on relevance and content quality. The stronger return is usually lower bounce on mobile.
