What is Doorway Page?
A doorway page is one of many near-identical pages built to capture search queries, funnelling visitors to the same destination without offering anything distinct. Google treats these as spam and has done for years. The classic version is a set of city pages where only the place name changes. Same headline, same body copy, same list of services, different town.
Duplicate Entry Page
How Google identifies these pages
The test is whether each page has standalone value for the person who lands on it, so the systems look at how much the pages duplicate each other, whether they appear in real navigation or only in a sitemap, and whether every one of them funnels to the same conversion point.
Be honest about the common case. Twenty pages reading ‘digital marketing in Gurgaon’, ‘digital marketing in Noida’ and ‘digital marketing in Faridabad’, with the city name swapped and nothing else altered, are precisely what the doorway policy was written to target. Agencies across Delhi NCR still ship them. They sometimes rank for a while, then stop.
Detection is not manual any more, which matters, because algorithmic systems compare pages at scale and demote a whole set in one pass rather than picking off individual URLs slowly over time. The failure arrives suddenly.
What makes a location page legitimate instead
Genuine local pages carry information that only applies to that place: named team members who actually cover the area, client work in that market described specifically, local pricing where it differs, directions, parking, nearby landmarks, and photographs of that office rather than stock images of a skyline.
A real Noida page might discuss the mix of Sector 62 offices and Sector 18 retail, and explain how enquiry patterns there differ from Gurugram. You could not reuse that page for Faridabad by changing one word. That is the bar.
Practical rule: if you cannot write four hundred words about the location that would be factually wrong on any other location page, do not publish it. One strong page covering Delhi NCR beats fifteen thin ones. Every time.
What this looks like in practice
A Gurugram agency serving real estate clients builds three location pages instead of thirty, and each one names the sectors and markets it genuinely works in, lists the properties handled there, and shows the consultant who covers that patch with a direct WhatsApp line. Slower to produce. Roughly a week of research each.
They survive algorithm updates, and the enquiries that arrive come from people who recognised their own area in the copy rather than from anyone who bounced within four seconds.

Doorway Page — questions, answered.
No. Pages with genuine local detail, named local staff, real case work and information that could not be copied to another city are fine. The policy targets near-duplicate sets built only to catch queries, not legitimate local pages.
Consolidate them. Merge the useful material into a smaller number of properly researched pages and redirect the rest with 301s. Recovery after a demotion usually takes several months, so start the cleanup before rankings slide further.
