What is Featured Snippet?
A featured snippet is a short answer Google lifts from a page and displays in a box at the top of the results. Sometimes called position zero. It sits above the first ordinary result, carries a link back to the source, and tends to take a large share of the clicks on question-shaped queries. Google picks the source itself. You cannot apply.

How Google builds the box
Google first finds pages that already rank well for the query, usually inside the top ten, then looks for a passage on one of those pages that answers the question cleanly and lifts it into the box. Paragraph snippets run roughly forty to sixty words. Lists and tables get pulled too, straight from your ordered lists or table markup.
Formatting drives most of it, because a question written as a heading and followed immediately by a direct answer in plain language is far easier for Google to extract than the same information buried down in paragraph six.
You already need to rank. Snippets are not a shortcut past that, and a page sitting on the third results page will never be considered no matter how neatly the answer is written.
Why most attempts fail
Burying the answer. A page opens with three hundred words of preamble about why the topic matters and only answers the question halfway down, at which point Google has usually skipped it and taken a competitor who led with the answer instead.
Writing too long is second. A ninety-word block gets truncated or ignored. Keep the answer paragraph tight, then expand underneath for readers who want the detail.
Third, targeting queries that have no snippet at all, so check the live SERP first, because if Google shows no answer box for ‘best co-working space gurugram’ then no amount of clever formatting is going to create one.
Putting it to work
Filter Search Console to queries containing who, what, how, why or cost, sort them by impressions, then cross-check which of those actually show an answer box on a live search, because where you already sit in positions two to eight and a snippet exists you have a genuine shot.
Then rewrite. Add the question as an H3, answer it in about fifty words directly below, and keep the phrasing close to how people really search. A property site answering ‘what is the stamp duty in haryana’ should say it in sentence one.

Featured Snippet — questions, answered.
Not always. If the box fully answers the query, many people read it and never click, which is sometimes called a zero-click search. Snippets pay off best when the answer naturally invites a follow-up, such as pricing, process or local specifics.
Add the nosnippet meta tag, or use data-nosnippet on specific elements to exclude just those parts. Most sites should not bother. Losing the box usually means a competitor takes it and the visibility with it.
