What is Funnel Drop-Off?
A funnel dropoff is the proportion of people you lose at each step on the way to converting. You will see it written funnel drop-off, funnel dropoff and funnel drop off, and all three mean the same thing. Product page to cart, cart to checkout, checkout to payment. Every step sheds somebody. Mapping those percentages tells you exactly where the money leaks out, and it is almost always somewhere other than where the team assumed it was.

How funnel drop-off actually works
Define the steps in order, count unique users at each, and calculate the percentage lost between one and the next. GA4 has a funnel exploration report that does this the moment you have the right events firing.
What you are hunting is the step with the steepest fall relative to the others, because some loss is entirely natural and product page to add-to-cart always sheds plenty of people given that browsing is a legitimate thing to do. Checkout to payment should not. Segment by device and source before concluding anything.
Where teams get funnel drop-off wrong
Optimising the wrong step. Teams pour weeks into the product page because it is visible and enjoyable to redesign, while checkout quietly loses a far larger share of people to something that would take an afternoon to fix. Rank leaks by absolute users lost.
Second, defining the funnel too loosely, since a funnel running homepage to purchase in two steps tells you nothing useful and you need the intermediate events, particularly inside checkout.
Third, assuming a big drop always means damage. If your traffic mix shifted toward cold prospecting last month, top-of-funnel drop-off rises for reasons that have nothing to do with your site.
What good looks like in India
Instrument checkout properly, because that is where Indian stores lose the most recoverable revenue, which means separate events for address entry, pin code check, shipping selection, payment method choice and payment completion. Once those exist the leak identifies itself inside a week.
Frequent culprits: the pin code serviceability check lagging or failing, shipping charges appearing for the first time at the final step, a coupon field sending people off to search, and OTP verification timing out on a weak connection.

Funnel Drop-Off — questions, answered.
It is the share of people who leave at a given step instead of moving to the next one. If 1,000 people reach your cart and 400 start checkout, the funnel dropoff at that step is 60 percent. Map every step and the largest recoverable leak becomes obvious.
No. Bounce rate covers people who arrive and leave without engaging at all. A funnel drop off measures loss between two specific steps you defined, so it tells you where in the journey the problem sits rather than simply that one exists.
Meaningful loss is normal at every stage and the figure varies too widely across categories to benchmark usefully. Track your own funnel over time and investigate any step that suddenly worsens, since a change usually points at something fixable.
Fire distinct events for each stage, then build a funnel exploration report from them. Shopify and most checkout platforms already send standard e-commerce events, though individual checkout stages usually need adding by hand.
