What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation)?

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimisation, is the practice of shaping your content so AI systems can find it, understand it and cite it in their answers. The targets are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini and Claude rather than a ranked list of ten blue links, which means the page you already published now has a second reader with very different habits. Same pages. Different consumer.

Generative Engine Optimisation

How GEO actually works

Generative systems pull from a mix of sources. Some read a live search index at the moment you type your question, some rely on what they absorbed during training, and most do a bit of both, which is why the same prompt asked twice can surface different pages. Bing supplies part of the web layer behind ChatGPT. Perplexity runs its own retrieval and shows the source links right under the answer.

So the mechanics are less exotic than the name suggests. A model retrieves a handful of pages, reads them and stitches together a response with citations attached, which leaves you two jobs: be one of those pages, and write clearly enough that a paragraph can be lifted whole without losing its meaning. Nothing more mysterious than that.

That rewards a particular kind of writing. Short definitional sentences. Named things instead of vague ones. A property page stating that Sector 65 Gurugram inventory sits between ₹2.4 crore and ₹3.8 crore gives a model something concrete to quote, while a page promising premium pricing in a prime location gives it nothing at all.

Where teams get it wrong

The most common error is treating GEO as a separate channel with its own budget and its own agency. It is not. It sits on top of the same technical health, the same content depth and the same credibility signals your organic search work already needs, and a site that cannot be crawled properly will not be cited properly either.

The second error is chasing tricks. Hidden instruction text aimed at models, keyword-stuffed question blocks, pages assembled entirely from bullet points with no substance underneath them, none of it holds up for long, and all of it makes the page worse for the humans who do land on it.

What this looks like in practice

For a Delhi NCR brand the practical work is unglamorous. Write the pricing down. Publish the service areas by name, Golf Course Road, Sohna Road, Noida Sector 18, instead of claiming you cover the region, and keep a proper about page carrying real people and real credentials rather than a stock photo.

Then answer the questions clients ask on calls, in the words they use. Then watch. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity the questions your buyers ask, note which brands get named and which do not, and you have a baseline you can re-check any Tuesday afternoon without a single tool subscription.

FAQ

GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) — questions, answered.

Is GEO different from SEO? +

It overlaps heavily. GEO adds a focus on clear, quotable, well attributed writing that an AI system can summarise without mangling it, but the foundation underneath, crawlability, content quality and genuine authority, is what ordinary search optimisation has always demanded.

Can I track GEO results? +

Only partially. There is no clean referral report for most AI answers, so teams fall back on branded search volume, direct traffic, and manual checks of how the brand appears when they ask the assistants the same questions each month.
