What is Google Business Profile?
Google Business Profile is the listing you claim and manage that decides how your business shows up in Google Maps, the local pack and the panel on the right of a branded search. Categories, hours, photos, posts, Q&A and reviews all live here. For most Indian service businesses it pulls more enquiries than the website does.
Google Business Profile Listing
How the profile earns visibility
You claim the listing, verify it by postcard, video or phone, and from that point you own the fields. Primary category is the biggest lever, and secondary categories widen your reach without ever overriding the primary one, so pick the term your buyers actually type into the box.
Service areas, opening hours, attributes and the description follow, and Google reads every one of them. Photos matter far more than most teams expect, because a person choosing between two clinics or two restaurants in Maps will judge you on the first four images long before reading a word of the description. Posts run for about a week. Use them for offers and site-visit weekends.
Q&A is public and anyone can answer, including a competitor who would rather you did not, so seed the obvious questions yourself: parking, payment modes, whether you take walk-ins.
The errors that cost enquiries
Unverified and duplicate listings are everywhere. A restaurant group opens an outlet in Indiranagar, a delivery aggregator auto-creates a second listing for the same address, and now your reviews split across two profiles so that neither one accumulates enough prominence to hold a position. Merge them properly. Do not just abandon one.
Hours are the other quiet killer, because Diwali, Holi and long weekends change trading hours across almost every Indian retail and hospitality business, and a profile that says ‘Open’ while the shutter is down earns you a one-star review that outlives the holiday by several years.
Then the description. Teams stuff it with keywords, Google does not rank on that field anyway, and the person reading it is sitting in traffic deciding whether to drive over, so write it for them.
What this looks like in practice
A dental clinic in Khan Market typically runs two demand channels at once: Practo for the patient comparing doctors and reading credentials, and Google for the patient who wants the nearest decent option today. Practo builds the credibility. Google books the appointment, because the call button is sitting right there under the name.
Add the WhatsApp number as the primary contact wherever your front desk can handle chat volume, since an enquiry that starts on WhatsApp converts faster than a form fill and survives a missed call. Upload real photos of the frontage and the signboard too, so a first-time visitor can find your entrance in a crowded market lane.

Google Business Profile — questions, answered.
No. The profile wins the local search while the website answers the deeper questions about pricing, doctors, floor plans or menus, and Google cross-checks the two, so a profile pointing at a thin or broken site tends to hold weaker positions over time.
Once a week is a sensible rhythm for retail, hospitality and clinics. Posts expire quickly, so treat them as a noticeboard for offers, new outlets and event weekends rather than a content channel needing long-form writing.
