What is Keyword Intent?

Keyword intent is what a person actually wants when they type a query into Google. Two searches can share words and want completely different things, so someone searching ‘flats in Noida’ is browsing while someone searching ‘3bhk resale sector 78 noida price’ is close to a site visit. Same market, same city. Very different page needed.

Search Keyword Intent

The four types of keyword intent

The usual split is four buckets. Informational, where someone wants to know something. Navigational, where they want a specific site. Commercial, where they are comparing options. Transactional, where they are ready to act.

You do not have to guess which bucket a query sits in, because Google has already decided and the results page shows you the answer in full. If page one is all blog posts and a People Also Ask block, your product page will not rank there no matter how many backlinks you point at it.

Intent also shifts with the calendar, so a phrase like ‘Diwali gift hampers’ behaves like a browsing query through August and turns into a buying query by the third week of October.

The errors that cost the most

Chasing volume is the big one. A team pulls a keyword list, sorts by search volume descending and writes for the top rows, which are almost always informational head terms owned by publishers with a decade of authority behind them. Months of work. No revenue.

Second error is one page trying to serve two intents, so a Shopify collection page padded with 1,200 words of buying-guide copy ends up mediocre at both jobs when it could have been two strong pages. Split it. Guide on the blog, products on the collection page, link between them.

Third, ignoring what the SERP is telling you. If Google shows a map pack, it wants a local business, not your article.

Reading intent in practice

A restaurant group in Indiranagar might find that ‘best pasta bangalore’ returns Zomato and Swiggy listings plus a handful of aggregator blogs, which makes ranking an owned site there close to hopeless. But ‘italian restaurant indiranagar booking’ returns business profiles and reservation pages. That one is winnable, with a strong Google Business Profile and a clean booking page.

Do this before writing anything: open an incognito window, run the query, note the top five formats, then decide honestly whether your team can produce that format better than whatever is already sitting there.

FAQ

Keyword Intent — questions, answered.

What is a high intent keyword? +

High intent keywords are the ones where the searcher is close to acting, so it usually carries a qualifier: a price, a location, a brand, or a word like buy, book or hire. ‘Seo agency gurgaon pricing’ is high intent. ‘What is seo’ is not. Lower volume, far better conversion.

How do I check the intent behind a keyword? +

Search it in an incognito window and study the results. The page formats Google has chosen tell you what it believes searchers want: blog posts mean informational, product pages mean transactional, a map pack means local. Trust the SERP over any tool label.

Can one page rank for several intents at once? +

Rarely, and usually only for closely related ones. A page built to sell will struggle against pages built to explain. If you find a keyword cluster spanning two intents, build two pages and link them together rather than compromising one.
