What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a proposed community convention: a markdown file at your domain root listing your most important pages for AI systems to read. It is not an official standard, no major AI company has adopted it, and Google has said it does not currently use the file. Worth knowing about. Not worth reorganising your roadmap around.
llms.txt (proposed LLM content convention)
How the proposal works
The idea is simple enough. You publish a file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt holding a short description of the site and a curated list of links in markdown, each with a line explaining what it covers, so that a model reading it gets a clean map instead of crawling through navigation menus, consent banners and footer link soup.
Some implementations pair it with an llms-full.txt carrying the actual page content as plain markdown. Documentation sites went first. Their content was already structured that way.
The catch sits in the adoption column. Publishing the file creates no obligation for anyone to read it, and robots.txt only works because search engines agreed to honour it across decades of practice, whereas nothing remotely equivalent has happened here.
Where the confusion creeps in
The biggest mistake is believing this is settled infrastructure. Vendors sell llms.txt generation as an AI search service, clients come away thinking a box has been ticked, and the box has not been ticked, because Google has stated plainly that it does not use the file.
The second mistake is treating it as a substitute for the actual work. A well built site with clean HTML, sensible headings and readable content is already legible to anything that fetches it. A messy site with a tidy llms.txt is still a messy site.
Third, teams publish the file and never touch it again, so links rot, products get renamed, and six months later the file describes a version of your business that stopped existing, which is worse than having published nothing at all.
A sensible position to take
If your site runs on something where adding the file costs twenty minutes, add it. Keep it short. Keep the links honest, move on to work that matters, and treat it as a small optional gesture with a small chance of mattering later rather than a strategy anybody should be billing you for.
What deserves the real hours is different. Server rendered content that does not need JavaScript to appear, accurate pricing on the page, clear headings and a sitemap that reflects reality will all do far more for a Gurugram e-commerce brand on Shopify than any speculative file sitting at the root.

llms.txt — questions, answered.
You can, and the cost is low, but do not expect measurable results from it. Treat it as a small optional addition rather than an AI search strategy, and put the effort into content quality and technical health.
Google has said it does not currently use the file. Other AI companies have made no formal commitment either, so it remains a community proposal without official backing from any major provider.
