What is Retargeting?

Retargeting shows ads to people who have already interacted with you. Site visitors, cart abandoners, video watchers, your own customer list. Because these people already know the brand, response rates run high and reported ROAS looks superb. A large part of that performance is credit for demand that already existed, and that is the part teams consistently miss.

Retargeting

How retargeting actually works

A pixel or the Conversions API records who visited and what they did, and you build audiences from that: everyone who viewed a product in fourteen days, everyone who added to cart in seven, everyone who bought in ninety so you can exclude them properly.

Segment by recency and depth, because a cart abandoner from yesterday is a completely different proposition from somebody who glanced at your homepage three weeks ago and serving both the same ad wastes money on one while underserving the other. Exclusions matter more than inclusions.

Where teams get retargeting wrong

Overspending because the ROAS looks good. Retargeting audiences are small and finite, so pushing more budget in simply drives frequency up, the same person sees your ad eleven times, and you pay repeatedly to reach somebody who was always going to buy. Reported return holds. Incremental return collapses.

Second, discounting immediately, since a ten percent code shown to every cart abandoner teaches people to abandon carts and often ends up funding orders that would have arrived at full price anyway.

Third, running one generic ad to the whole pool. Product viewers should see that product, abandoners should see a reason to finish, past customers should see something they do not already own.

What good looks like in India

Keep retargeting to a modest share of total spend, cap frequency at a level you would personally tolerate, exclude recent purchasers everywhere, and then run a holdout. Turn it off for two weeks and watch total revenue rather than campaign revenue. The result is frequently uncomfortable and always useful.

For Indian brands with WhatsApp opt-in, a good chunk of what retargeting does can be handled by a message instead, at a fraction of the cost and somewhere people actually read. Use ads for the people you cannot message.

FAQ

Retargeting — questions, answered.

How long should a retargeting window be? +

Match it to your consideration cycle. Seven to fourteen days covers most impulse and mid-ticket e-commerce, while furniture, property and high-value purchases justify thirty days or more because people genuinely do take that long to decide.

Why is my retargeting ROAS so high? +

Because you are advertising to people who already decided. High retargeting ROAS is usually a measurement artefact rather than a marketing achievement, and a holdout test will tell you how much of it is genuinely incremental.
