What is Session Recording?
A session recording is a replay of one visitor’s journey through your site. Mouse movement, taps, scrolling, form interactions, the pages they moved between. Watching ten of them teaches you more about your checkout than a month of dashboards, because you finally see the hesitation that analytics only ever reports to you as a drop-off.

How session recordings actually work
A script captures the DOM and interaction events, then reconstructs the visit as something playable, which is why file sizes stay manageable and why the replay occasionally looks slightly different from your live site.
Recording tools mask sensitive fields by default, hiding passwords, card numbers and usually all form inputs, and you should check those settings before you begin because capturing customer personal data you never intended to collect creates a real problem under the DPDP Act. Then filter aggressively. Watch abandoned checkouts and rage clicks.
Where teams get session recordings wrong
Watching randomly. Sitting through fifty unfiltered sessions is a remarkably slow way to learn very little, so filter by behaviour first and pull only the users who reached checkout and left, or viewed three products without adding anything, or triggered an error.
Second, generalising from one session, where you watch somebody struggle with a size chart and immediately rebuild it, when maybe that was simply one confused person on a bad afternoon.
Third, forgetting privacy. Recordings capture more than you expect. Mask inputs, restrict access, set a retention period and actually delete beyond it.
What good looks like in India
Set aside an hour a fortnight and watch mobile sessions that abandoned at checkout. That single habit surfaces more actionable problems than most paid audits ever will.
Common discoveries on Indian stores include a coupon field inviting people to leave and hunt for a code they never find, a pin code checker failing silently on slow connections, an OTP step that times out, and address forms demanding a landmark in some rigid format. Each is losing you paid traffic right now.

Session Recording — questions, answered.
They are, provided you handle personal data properly. Disclose the practice in your privacy policy, mask input fields so you are not capturing personal details, limit who can view replays, and set a retention period consistent with DPDP Act expectations.
Ten to fifteen well-filtered sessions usually surface the main problems on a page, and past twenty you mostly see repeats. The value comes from the filter you apply rather than the number of hours you sit through.
