What is Internal Linking?

Internal linking means connecting pages on your own domain with contextual links. It does two jobs at once, because crawlers follow those links to discover pages and work out which ones matter, while visitors use the same links to move deeper into your site. Anchor text tells Google what the destination covers. A page with no internal links pointing at it is close to invisible.

Internal Link Architecture

How link equity moves around

Your homepage usually holds the most authority because most external links point there, and that authority flows outward through your internal links, which is why a page sitting three clicks deep with a single incoming link receives a fraction of what a page in the main navigation gets.

Anchor text is the second lever. Linking with the words ‘luxury apartments in Golf Course Road’ tells Google considerably more than ‘click here’ ever will, so vary the wording naturally across the site rather than repeating one exact phrase until the pattern looks manipulated.

Depth matters too. Keep commercially important pages within three clicks of home, because anything buried at click depth six on a large catalogue is quietly competing for crawl attention it will never actually receive.

Common gaps in link structure

Orphan pages. A hotel group publishes a landing page for its Bandra property, links to it from exactly one Meta ad campaign, never adds it to the navigation or mentions it in any body copy anywhere, and then wonders why the page ranks for nothing at all.

The other pattern is over-linking in footers, where two hundred site-wide links dilute the signal coming from every single one of them, which is why contextual links placed inside body content carry far more weight than anything sitting below the fold on every page.

And blog posts that link nowhere. If you publish a piece on choosing a co-working space in Cyber Hub and it never once links to your own service page, you have written an article that earns you nothing.

What this looks like in practice

Run a crawl, export every URL carrying fewer than three internal links, sort that list by commercial value, and for most Delhi NCR e-commerce brands you will surface high-margin category pages nobody ever thought to link from the blog. Add three contextual links each.

Then build the habit into publishing, so every new article ships with two links out to money pages and one link in from an older related post, which after a year leaves a hotel group in Indiranagar with a structure competitors cannot copy quickly. It grew with the content.

FAQ

Internal Linking — questions, answered.

How many internal links should one page have? +

There is no fixed number. A 1,500-word article carrying five to ten contextual links reads naturally. Twenty links stuffed into the same word count reads like spam to both people and crawlers. Let the content decide.

Should internal links open in a new tab? +

For links within your own site, no. Keep the same tab so browsing feels normal and the back button works. New tabs make sense for external references and downloadable documents, where you do not want to pull the visitor away from your page.
