What is Server-Side Tracking?
Server-side tracking sends conversion data from your own server to ad platforms, rather than relying on the visitor’s browser. Browser pixels get blocked by ad blockers, Safari tracking prevention and iOS privacy settings. A server-to-server call does not care about any of that, so far more of your real conversions actually get reported.
Server-Side Tracking
How server-side tracking actually works
The browser pixel model is simple and fragile. A script loads in the visitor’s browser and pings Meta or Google when something happens, and if that script is blocked the event never fires, so the platform never learns the sale occurred at all.
Server-side moves the call. Your server, or a server-side Google Tag Manager container, receives the event and sends it straight to Meta’s Conversions API. Most brands run both together, with the pixel firing what it can and the server sending everything, deduplicated by a shared event ID. Get that ID right or you will double-count every sale you make.
Where teams get server-side tracking wrong
Skipping deduplication. Without a matching event ID on both events, Meta counts the same purchase twice, your reported ROAS doubles, and you cheerfully scale a campaign on revenue that does not exist. Check this before anything else.
Second, sending thin payloads, because the entire value of server-side comes from the customer parameters attached to the event, and a purchase sent without hashed email, hashed phone, IP or user agent cannot be matched to anybody and is close to worthless.
Third, assuming it fixes attribution. It recovers lost conversion signal, which improves optimisation and reporting. It does not settle which channel deserves the credit.
What good looks like in India
For a Shopify store, the fastest route is the native Meta and Google integrations, which handle server-side events without custom development. Beyond that a server-side GTM container gives you control over every destination from one place.
Do it in order. Get the Conversions API live with proper deduplication and rich customer parameters, verify in Events Manager that event match quality has actually improved, and only then add other destinations. A Gurugram brand doing this properly usually sees more conversions reported and better optimisation within a fortnight, because the algorithm finally has complete data to learn from.

Server-Side Tracking — questions, answered.
Yes, run both. The pixel captures behavioural signals the server cannot see, and together they give the platform the fullest picture available. Just make sure event IDs match, so conversions get deduplicated rather than counted twice.
It improves reported ROAS by recovering conversions that were previously invisible, and it usually improves real performance too, since the algorithm optimises better on complete data. The underlying business does not transform overnight.
