What is SERP Features?
SERP features are the elements Google places on a results page beyond the standard list of links. Map packs, image carousels, People Also Ask, video blocks, review stars, shopping tiles, knowledge panels. They push classic organic results down the page and change what winning actually means, because ranking first below a map pack and three ads is not really ranking first.
Search Engine Results Page Features
How Google decides what to show
Features are triggered by intent. Search a restaurant name and you get a map pack plus a knowledge panel, because Google reads the query as local. Search ‘how to fix a leaking tap’ and you get video results, because that task is easier to show than to describe.
Most features draw on structured data or on a specific Google product, so review stars need Product or Review schema, map results come from your Google Business Profile, and image carousels pull from indexed images with sensible filenames and alt text.
None of it is guaranteed. Google tests features constantly and removes them without notice, which is why chasing a single feature as a strategy is fragile.
Where campaigns go wrong
Reporting rank without looking at the page. A dashboard says position three, then you open the same SERP on a phone and position three sits below the fold, under ads, a map pack and a People Also Ask block. The number is accurate and useless.
Marking up content that readers cannot see is another one, since adding FAQ schema for questions absent from the visible page risks a manual action, and Google has narrowed FAQ rich result eligibility to a small set of sites anyway.
Ignoring the map pack is the costliest mistake for local brands, because for a clinic or a cafe those three listings take most of the clicks, and getting into them has more to do with proximity, categories and reviews than with your homepage title tag.
What to do about it
Run your top twenty queries by hand on a mobile handset, on mobile data rather than office wifi, and screenshot whatever appears, because that is the real competitive picture for a Bandra cafe or a Noida coaching centre. Not the dashboard.
Then match effort to feature. Local queries mean Google Business Profile work, photos and review replies. Product queries mean clean Product schema and a Merchant Center feed. Question-shaped queries mean a tight answer near the top of the page.

SERP Features — questions, answered.
Often yes. When Google answers the query on the results page or fills the top with maps and shopping tiles, fewer people click through. The counter is to target queries where a click is still needed, and to compete for the features themselves.
Only partly. Correct structured data, a well maintained Business Profile and content shaped to the query make you eligible. Google still decides what to display, and eligibility never guarantees placement for any given search.
